New painting prep - tiger and human

Came in today to organize my studio for the crit, bringing out the previous work i had done to show. Using the composition i created in my sketchbook a few weeks ago, i started to draw out an outline of the tiger womens form. I found this quite hard to do, trying to fit the image to the board and then getting the proportaions correct but i am pleases with the outcome. This image is going to show a human/animal stuck between forms, indicating how it has not been finished by evolution, a rejection, a mistake, or perhaps it the human/animal is meant to be like this? My next step is to undercoat the image with acrylic paint again to make areas stand forward more from the board and the colours i am going to use will have that extra brightness/ contrast to them. Over the weekend i need to do a compositional drawing or painting of what the colours will be.

Abstraction

this morning was spent doing more painting to the canvas piece. I decided to use darker reds instead of the pinks that made the experimantal one before too light and i want this one to have more depth, hence using darker colours. I plan to do the same as i have done in the experimental piece, using string dipped into coloured PVA to create inner bodily parts and Veins and I am going to do more drawings of mutated figures, using my own creations, and creations Jake has created, making this piece part collaborative as well.

Bat-Bird! The painting begins

I spent this afternoon drawing on the outline of Jake's created Batbird, and then I applied the undercoating of white acrylic I mentioned doing yesturday as a primer for the oil to go over and to give more dimension to the picture, bringing areas forward and leaving areas not painted with white, going backward.

Completion!!

Today, i completed the painting of the Birdman. I completed the last wing and worked in darker areas around the paintng to give it more depth nd contrast. This is my first comleted board painting and I feel quite pleased with the end result. However, the figure is faded into the wood and does not stand out much, it is quite flat. Perhaps if i used a better primer over the wood or do an acrylic base before i paint with oils, it will lift the image off the board more, give it more dimension, and if I used white acrylic, the oil colours may stand out more, become brighter? Composition is something I also need to consider, as parts of the figure dipear of the board. This could be to add an illusion of not being able to fully see the overall figure, there is still some unkown, some mystery, to it, but I may need to reconsider the scale.

Abstraction

The afternoon I decided to use to work on my canvas with the abstraction imagery of the inside of the body. I found that, as i applied the paint to the canvas the PVA primer i used was comming up and moveing the paintaround more. Although this means i used too much PVA, i liked the effect it created. In the maquete i did for this piece, I used very pink paint that, though it worked well in light and dark areas, it needed to be a darker pink/red to link more to fleshy colours of inside the body.
My next step for this piece is to mix up more darker colours to use and perhaps use other striking colours of green/yellow? to get a high contrast between colours, and to make them represent better the mutation inside the body, the change.

Bat-Bird!

I spent this morning finishing the apperance of the creature bat/bird and was able to finish its body, its legs and find another option for its head, which is Fur. Me and Jake decided that skin over the head just did not work, that it needed a bit more volume over the bone so that it blended in better with the rest of the body. Also decided to have reptile eyes as if this could be the outcome of a bird/bats eyes, and to also add a more animalistic qualtiy to it, to make it seem more predatory. The legs are to also be covered in fur, but to have the feathers of the bird running through it.

Plan of appearance of Jakes 1st creature - Bat and Bird?

Over the weekend, I took home the plans I traced of the skeleton of Jakes Batbird so that I could begin to work out what the outer apperance of the creature would look like. So far I have come up with the chest of the body mainly being covered with bat fur, but it will have feathers in patchy ares IN the fur. There is a bird wing of feathers, and a bat wing that is mainly going to be covered by thin, translucent skin, where you will be able to see the veins under the skin. I found the head difficult to visualise, so decided I would try using just skin to cover the bone to begin with. However, it has not started out too well, and I do not think the sking or the eyes work so far. I am going to take what i have done so far back to college, where i can plan better with Jake the appearance of the creature.
